Pourquoi et comment nettoyer les cuirs de votre voiture ?

Why and how to clean the leather in your car?

Leather is a noble, living material that deserves your attention. In a car, it provides elegance and comfort… provided it is well maintained. Without care, it dulls, becomes sticky, stiff, and can even crack . Fortunately, with the right techniques and products, it is possible to preserve – or even revive – the shine of automotive leather, even after several years .

Why clean your leather regularly?

Leather is an animal skin : it breathes, absorbs, and deteriorates. A poorly maintained leather interior can quickly lose its original color, become shiny, hard, greasy , or even crackle due to the effects of time, heat, and accumulated dirt.

Some signs that your leather needs a good cleaning:

  • Oily or shiny appearance

  • Sticky or stiff touch

  • Dull or yellowed color

  • Color transfer marks (jeans, belts, objects, etc.)

👉 Note: Light-colored leathers like beige or white tend to gray out quickly if not cleaned regularly.

Absolutely avoid ❌

You may have heard that you can clean leather with Nivea cream, baby milk, or even hoof oil? Forget all that. These products saturate the pores, make the leather greasy, or weaken it. What you need are specific products for automotive leather , designed to gently clean without altering the material.

How to clean the leather in your vehicle? 🧼

What you need:

  • A leather cleaner (gentle for new leathers, stronger for older ones)

  • A special leather brush (with soft bristles)

  • A clean microfiber cloth

Cleaning steps:

  1. Apply the product directly to the leather brush .

  2. Work in small areas using circular motions to dislodge dirt from the pores.

  3. Wipe off the excess with a microfiber cloth.

  4. Repeat the process if the leather remains shiny or sticky.

⚠️ No need to scrub like crazy. The work is done on the surface, no need to press hard.

And then? Time for protection 🛡️

Cleaning is good. Protecting is better. Once the leather is perfectly clean, it is essential to apply a nourishing and protective lotion , otherwise it will remain vulnerable to UV rays, heat, and dryness.

Instructions for use:

  1. Apply the leather protective lotion with a cotton applicator or microfiber cloth.

  2. Spread it evenly from seam to seam .

  3. Let it sit for a few hours so the leather can absorb the material.

  4. If necessary, wipe off the excess.

💡 Leather treatment is generally done every 3 months for a regularly used vehicle.

Result?

A matte, supple, hydrated leather... and above all, an interior that retains its value over time. Leather is not just any covering: it deserves true, passionate care .
